What is Blizzard Jailbreak?

Blizzard Jailbreak is an open-source project allowing you to jailbreak iOS 15 up to the latest iOS 16 and run tweaks on your device. It's based on the checkm8 exploit, therefore it will work only on older iDevices such as A9-A11. Newer iPhones starting from XS will be not supported.

GeoSn0w's (from iDevice Central) semi-tethered jailbreak was at first designed for iOS 9 with no support for tweaks installation. This was mostly a development platform to learn how to create an iOS jailbreak. Eventually, Blizzard for iOS 9 delivered support for tweaks injection, making it a full-featured jailbreak ready to use on a daily basis by the community.

Because unc0ver is dead, and CoolStar has only a big mouth with Cheyote, Blizzard Jailbreak is developed to deliver support for iOS 15 and iOS 16. The progress is good, as GeoSn0w says, but there is no release and no tweak support yet with this tool. This can change when the libhooker library is updated to support rootless jailbreaks running iOS 15 and iOS 16.

Blizzard Jailbreak

Blizzard Jailbreak is a semi-tethered jailbreak, which means that with every restart of your device, you will be required to re-jailbreak to return to the jailbroken state with tweaks installed. It will work only with a couple of iPhones such as the iPhone 6, iPhone SE, iPhone 8, and iPhone X.

What's important, GeoSn0w will release Blizzard Jailbreak source code through the GitHub Repository, making it possible for others to participate in the development process. This is huge news for the jailbreak community and all security researchers and tweaks developers.

Blizzard Jailbreak is released as an IPA package that can be sideloaded with an IPA installer on iOS 15 and iOS 16. It will be possible to re-sign the app on your iDevice using Bullfrog Assistant IPA installer. This way, you will not need to use a computer to re-jailbreak when necessary.

From the technical side, Blizzard Jailbreak for iOS 16 may come with Sandbox Escape patches, mounted Root File System (but the jailbreak will be rootless), CodeSign patches, installed SSH for remote connection, support for modern package managers, patched iBoot to load the patched kernel, Procursus Rootless Bootstrap, and un-jailbreak feature.

Of course, the most appreciated feature of this jailbreak for iOS 16 will be support for tweak injection, making it possible to run tweaks on jailbroken devices. There is also an option to install fake signed IPA files without revokes or valid certificates in the jailbroken environment.

Blizzard Jailbreak will be packed also with an anti-piracy feature, but it will not remove pirated tweaks by default. There will be an option to block illegal repositories this way you will get access to only trusted tweak sources. Blocking pirated repositories will be optional.

As a modern jailbreak, Blizzard for iOS 16 – iOS 15 will drop support for Cydia and make space for newer package managers such as Sileo, Zebra, or Installer. Cydia requires a lot of fixes to make it work on iOS 15 therefore it's better to use something that works and is faster.

Blizzard is not the only jailbreak for iOS 15 under active development. Palera1n Jailbreak was already released and what's more, it installs by default Substitute making it possible to run tweaks on iOS 15.0 up to iOS 15.3.1. It's based on checkra1n and supports the same iDevices.

Palera1n can also run on iOS 15.0 – iOS 15.7, but the tweaks can run only up to iOS 15.3.1 because this relies on the iOS 15.1b3 "leaked" development kernel, and it isn't compatible with iOS 15.4 and newer. No tweak-supported jailbreaks can be used for development purposes.

Unlike Palera1n, Blizzard Jailbreak for iOS 16 and iOS 15 uses a different method to install the jailbreak, and most importantly it is rootless. This last thing can be an advantage for security reasons but at first, not all tweaks will run inside the box without modifications.

Because this is another jailbreak based on checkm8 exploit it will not work on newer devices. This is a big issue for some users but definitely, but it's better to add freshness to older devices by tweaking them when Apple decides to set the EOL status and then do nothing.

Blizzard Jailbreak for iOS 9.0 – iOS 9.3.6 and iOS 11.0 – iOS 11.4.1 was released as an open-source project with all files published through GitHub Repository. The source code is under GNU General Public License, and it was written in C 60.3% and Objective-C 39.7% languages. Feel free to mess with the code if you are a security researcher or a jailbreak developer.

Supported devices

All A9-A11 systems on a chip (SoC) are supported by jailbreak. Below, you can find the actual list of compatible Blizzard Jailbreak iPhones and iPads. The jailbreak was tested to run and work without bigger issues on iPod Touch 7 with iOS 15 installed.
